Brant Point Lighthouse
Where: Nantucket, MA
When: November 2016

First established in 1746, Brant Point Light is one of the most recognizable Nantucket landmarks. The tower has been replaced many times, but this beacon has guarded the entrance to one of the most storied harbors in New England for well over 200 years.

I took this shot on a particularly mild November morning. The wind was blowing at about 14 knots from the East and the sun had only recently risen above the horizon. I had walked just over a mile from the inn downtown where I was staying to meet the morning sun at the lighthouse. I composed several shots that morning, but this was far and away my favorite. Seeing the walkway, the sand on either side of the lighthouse, helps give the image a sense of place. A sense that this lighthouse, much like the town of Nantucket itself, is built on a constantly shifting sliver of sand. A sliver of sand that, with each passing year, is slowly returning to the ocean.
