Willard Beach Shack
Where: South Portland, ME
When: February 2016

The old fishing shacks at Fisherman’s Point are a landmark in South Portland. Although they have not been in use for many years, they act as a physical reminder of the Willard neighborhood’s history as a fishing community.

I took this image on a frigid February afternoon in 2016. Crossing the frozen sands of Willard Beach, I noticed the clouds above the shacks starting to break up. I found my spot, well inside the tidal zone, and lined up the shack directly in front of my lens. It took nearly an hour, but eventually the clouds broke enough to reveal a beautiful steel blue sky and allow the setting sun to illuminate the shack.

After nearly a decade photographing the Maine Coast, this shot is one of my favorites of all time.
